Party Disqualification: Peter Obi Asks Court To Dismiss PDP’s Suit

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is asking a Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a suit seeking his disqualification for nominating his campaign manager, Doyin Okupe, as his placeholder.

Last week, the Peoples Democratic Party had asked the court to bar Obi from replacing Okupe as his running mate.

³

The PDP had also prayed the court to prevent the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, from replacing Kabiru Masari as his running mate.

In the suit, the PDP also asked the court to disqualify both Obi and Tinubu if they replace Okupe and Masari as their running mates.

But both candidates have replaced the placeholders. Obi picked Yusuf Baba-Ahmed as his running mate, while Tinubu went for Kashim Shettima.

Responding to the originating motion, via a notice of preliminary objection, dated July 18, Obi’s counsel, Mr Alex Ejesieme (SAN), is seeking an order of the court striking out or dismissing PDP’s suit “for want of requisite jurisdiction”.

The objection by Obi to the PDP’s prayers is based on four grounds.

“The plaintiff’s suit is speculative, conjectural in nature and devoid of hard facts, thereby divesting this court of jurisdiction to adjudicate over same,” read the first ground.

Next, Obi’s counsel said that the PDP “has not disclosed any reasonable cause of action to activate the jurisdiction” of the court.

Obi’s counsel added that the PDP’s suit “is not situated within the jurisdictional confines of the Federal High Court”.

“The plaintiff’s suit is a gross abuse of court process,” Obi’s counsel added.

BREAKING:JAMB Announces 140 As Cut Off Mark For 2022 University Admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB and heads of tertiary institutions in the country have fixed the minimum cut-off mark for admissions in the 2022/2023 academic session.

At the 2022 Policy meeting on Admissions presided over by the Minister of Education in Abuja, the minimum cut-off marks for universities is pegged at140 while Polytechnics and colleges of education have 100 as minimum.

The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who announced the cut-off after votes by vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and provosts of colleges of education, saID the implication is that every institution has the right to fix its own cut-off mark even up to 220.

However, no one will be allowed to go below the agreed minimum cut off marks of 100 for colleges of education, 100 for polytechnics and 140 for universities.

The meeting also advocated the need for a review of admission criteria to give 10per cent discretional power of admission to heads of tertiary institutions.

What should my photo show?

We want to see how TVET is preparing young people with green and digital skills for the future. This year's theme is Transforming Youth Skills for the Future and submissions should focus on:

  • TVET for a sustainable future – photos of skilled young people contributing to green societies and economies.
  • Preparing for a digital world – photos of digitalization in TVET and training for the digital future of work.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Decide on your thematic area(s) of focus. This will ensure that your entry avoids being filtered out for not adhering to the theme.
  • Use a camera that can output high-resolution photos with a minimum of 3000 pixels on the longest side with 300 DPI/PPI setting. Exempted from this are photos taken using mobile phones in the highest resolution (acceptance of this type of entry is based on the quality of the submission).
  • Ensure that you have the consent of the people in the picture, especially if the focus is on a single person.
  • You can make simple edits to the photo but these need to be specified in the submission form.
Don’ts

  • Don't submit an entry of a photo collage (multiple photos on one frame).
  • Don't put watermarks, signature or any overlays on your picture.
  • Don't send pictures that are not related to any of the thematic areas.

When is the submission deadline?

The submission deadline is 15 August 2022. All photos must be accompanied by the completed submission form and sent to: unevoc.skills(at)unesco.org.
