How to deal with emotional stress

Everyone feels stressed at some point. Occasionally, you may feel a higher level of stress than is common for you. Anxiety or a depressive mood related to high levels of emotional stress are actually quite normal. What sets standard levels of stress apart from harmful levels is the way they affect your daily life and the methods you use to cope with them.By clearly identifying the ways in which you exhibit emotional stress and using techniques to cope with the sources (work, school, relationships, etc.), you can deal with the emotional stress present in your life.

For to be able to deal with stress, one needs to identify some symptoms, which may include
1  Look for physical symptoms. Stress can be incredibly disruptive to your physical health, as well as your emotional health. In fact, stress places physiological demands on your body that are called an “allostatic load.” When this load is too heavy, it can place you at risk for a variety of medical ailments, including serious diseases like diabetes, depression, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders.[3] This is part of why it’s so important to keep an eye on your stress levels; it could be causing physical symptoms that you can’t otherwise explain and could be damaging your health. Common physical effects of stress can include:

·         Headache
·         Muscle tension, aches and pains
·         Chest pain
·         Fatigue or exhaustion
·         Alteration of your appetite or sex drive
·         Upset stomach and nausea
·         Trouble sleeping
·         Heartburn or acid reflux
·         Difficulty with your bowels
·         Long-term effects of chronic stress include a weakened immune system, premature aging, increased risk of illness, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, depression, cognitive impairment, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, heart disease, and greater likelihood of developing illnesses in older age

2    Examine your recent temper. An overload of stress can manifest itself through a short temper or uncharacteristic difficulty managing anger. Anger (or extreme irritability) is one of the three primary stress emotions, along with anxiety and depression. This symptom of emotional distress is unhealthy for both you and those around you.
·         These changes can also exhibit as rapid changes to your mood—or mood swings—due to circumstances that wouldn’t typically bother you.
3 Log your sleep patterns. While certain symptoms of emotional stress are easily recognizable, other may be less so. Ongoing sleep disturbances are an indication of stress. You may be sleeping more or less than usual or having trouble falling or staying asleep when you try.[9] If you have trouble sleeping more than one or two nights a week with no identifiable physical reason that your doctor can determine, then emotional stress is a likely candidate.
·         Chronic tiredness and lethargy are just as often signs of emotional stressors as an inability to sleep, especially if no other illness explains your fatigue.[11]
4    Note changes in your weight or eating habits. If you find yourself eating more than usual or—alternatively—unable to maintain an appetite, this is a common sign of emotional distress. You may also notice fluctuations in weight without any big changes to your diet or exercise routine.
5  Log patterns of obsessive or compulsive behavior. The anxiety associated with emotional distress can find an outlet in obsessive behaviors related to other things. This can range from feeling a compulsion to wash your hands more often than normal all the way to a constant dread that something bad is going to happen.

6 Note the quality of your interactions with others. Another common sign of emotional stress is a change in your social behaviors. This can include anything from staying in far more often (when you used to be more social) to noticing a decline in your sex life with your partner. As with most of these symptoms, you can want to consult your doctor to rule out a potential physical ailment.
·         You may also see this manifest as a decline in your work or school performance or with colleagues.

7 Look for signs of depression.
Chronic stress, or the consistent, grinding stress that lasts for an extended period, has been linked to the development of depression. Studies have shown that stress can shrink the hippocampus, an area of the brain that effects short-term memory, learning, and emotional regulation. This can cause symptoms of depression, which include many of the symptoms mentioned in this article, such as trouble sleeping, change in appetite, and mood disruption. Depression is a serious health condition that often gets worse if left untreated, but it is also highly treatable. You should talk with a healthcare professional if you display these or other symptoms of depression, which include:
·         Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or anxiety
·         Feeling hopeless, worthless, or helpless
·         Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
·         Fatigue or exhaustion
·         Trouble concentrating or making decisions
·         Changes in appetite, weight, or sleep
·         Restlessness or irritability
·         Unexplained physical symptoms
·         Thoughts of harm, death, or suicide. If you are experiencing any thoughts of harm to yourself or others, call your emergency services

8 Determine your level of functioning.
Stress is a natural part of human life, and minor stress is often unavoidable. You may have a few areas of dysfunction, such as trouble sleeping or irritability, but not feel unable to cope. However, if you feel that your stress is interfering with your ability to live your life or even get through the day, you should seek help from a health care professional immediately. Here are some signs that your functioning may be impaired and that you should seek help:
·         You have seen a marked decline in your work or school performance
·         You feel anxious or depressed
·         You have begun to use alcohol or drugs to cope
·         You feel unable to cope, even with everyday things
·         You are experiencing fears that you can't explain
·         You have become obsessed with something, such as your weight
·         You have physical symptoms that your doctor cannot explain
·         You have withdrawn from people and activities you love
·         You have thoughts of harm to yourself or others

9 Take a mood test. It can be difficult to determine what you’re feeling and whether you should be worried about it. The best option is usually to consult with someone about your thoughts and feelings, but you can also try a mood assessment.
·         These types of self-assessment should not be a replacement for consulting your doctor, but they can help you identify whether your stress is minor and transitory, or whether you have a more serious cause for concern.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama has lauded Air Peace Airline for the successful evacuation of the first batch of  Nigerians willing to return from South Africa.
Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa of the Ministry’s Crises Monitoring and Public Communications Division made this known in a statement on Thursday following the successful evacuation mission.
According to him, Onyeama commended the proprietor and management of Air Peace Airlines while receiving 178 Nigerians that voluntarily decided to return to Nigeria following the incessant cases of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

More names remain on the voluntary evacuation list and hopefully, a second flight will be arriving in Johannesburg to fetch them.

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while awaiting the arrival of the first batch of returnees also confirmed that there were immigration issues which caused the delay.

According to her, immediately they arrive, they would each be given sim cards, data and airtime that would last almost two months to help them stay in touch with their families. There will be also be given some amount of money for their transportation
“The bank of industry will also be here to offer some entrepreneurship programme and some support to start a small business and there would be some stipends for transportation to take you home and we will profile them and for those who want to get any training, they will decide what kind of training they want to do and the Bank of industry will be there to provide it,” Dabiri said.

Eric Cantona becomes third Manchester United legend to win Uefa President’s Award

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 UEFA President’s Award.
Cantona will join an illustrious list of previous winners, including Eusebio, Alfredo Di Stefano and Paolo Maldini, and becomes the third former Unitedstar to receive the honour after Sir Bobby Charlton and David Beckham, who was presented with the award in 2018.

Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona will be presented the 2019 Uefa President's Award in recognition of his playing career and commitment to charitable causes after it, European soccer's governing body said on Tuesday.
The 53-year-old Frenchman will receive the award in Monaco on Thursday during the Champions League group stage draw.
"This award not only recognises his career as a player of the highest calibre, but also honours him for the person he is," Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2618837.html.
"A man who refuses compromise, who stands up for his values, who speaks his mind and in particular, puts his heart and his soul into supporting the causes he believes in."
Cantona won four Premier League titles in five years with United in the 1990s and scored 64 goals for the Old Trafford club in 143 appearances.
The former Auxerre, Marseille, Nimes and Leeds United player won 45 caps with France and tried his hand at acting and beach soccer following his retirement in 1997.
Cantona supports the Common Goal initiative, which funds soccer charities worldwide, and contributes 1% of his annual salary to the project co-founded by United's Juan Mata.
Former England captain David Beckham won the award in 2018.
Cantona will be presented with the award in Monaco on Thursday, where the Champions League group stage draw is due to take place.

Nigeria: Onuachu Scores Second Fastest Goal in International Football History As Eagles Beat Egypt 1-0

    By Alex Monye

Asaba — Debutant, Paul Onuachu scored the second fastest goal in the history of international

football when he blasted the ball past Egypt's goalkeeper, Mahmoud Gennesh, less than seven
seconds after the kick off of the international friendly at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba. Onuachu's goal is only second to Lukas Podolski's strike after six seconds for Germany against Ecuador in 2013. The win was Egypt's Coach, Javier Aguirre's first loss since he took over the reins of the Pharaohs. Yesterday's game was one of the matches lined up to prepare the Super Eagles for the forthcoming African Nations Cup, but the fans left the stadium disappointed with the dour game put up by the sides, who played without some of their biggest stars. While Egypt left out Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Hegazi and Elmohamady, Nigeria's stand-in captain, Ahmed Musa also did not feature in the game as he was said to have returned to Saudi Arabia for a club engagement. After Onuachu's wonder strike, Egypt tried to get back into the game, but they found the Super Eagles' defence marshalled by the day's skipper, William Troost-Ekong a hard nut to crack.
Nigeria had the chance to double their advantage in the 30th minute when Alex Iwobi latched on to the ball following Mahmoud Alaa's defensive error, but the Arsenal forward's strike was weak and easy for Gennesh to save. Nigeria continued their dominance of the first half, but poor decision making in the final third prevented them from adding to the scoreline. However, the Pharaohs came into the second half stronger and determined to get something out of the game, but they struggled to create good goal scoring opportunities. Egypt's clearest chance of getting the equaliser was thwarted in the 83rd minute by an inspired substitute goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, who pushed Islam Gaber's shot to the crossbar and got up to save Kouka's follow up effort. Speaking after the match, Super Eagles' coach, Gernot Rohr said his team would now focus on building a team for the Nations Cup. "The match was a great game and my players were hungry to win. The early goal gave the Eagles the confidence and getting this type of result against Egypt is good for the team.
"The new players have proved a point and have now set up competition in the squad ahead of the Nations Cup," he said. Also speaking on the game, William Troost-Ekong said, "We are happy with the victory. Although Egypt did not come with some of their top stars, they still gave us a good fight." Troost-Ekong refused to predict what Nigeria would do at the Nations Cup "because it is my first experience going to the competition. But I think with more games and team coordination, the Eagles will excel in Egypt." Egypt's coach, Javier Aguirre praised his lads for giving their best under difficult conditions, saying the match has given him more insight on the flaws in his team. "I am happy with my team's performance because the Eagles are good. This is why I accepted to play against Nigeria despite other teams calling for my team. "I decided to try out new players so that I can get more replacement for players like Mo Salah and the new players did their best

GOOD HABITS EVERYONE NEEDS FOR SUCCESS

1. Get on a good schedule. We need structure and routine in our lives. Our bodies expect it. They perform best when we operate on a regular schedule. We especially need to eat and sleep about the same time each day. If you are the parent of a young child, it is your job to teach this habit early. This routine stays with a person their whole life and helps them to develop good work habits. Find a schedule that works for you and stick to it!
 2. Eat a healthy diet. Our brains need the right food to perform at their peak. Don’t go to school on an empty stomach. Students need to train themselves early to eat a balanced and healthy diet. We tend to carry the habits we learn when we are young forward with us for most of our lives. Learning to eat right now can avoid many health issues down the road.
 3. Learn to exercise. We need physical activity to stay healthy. The benefits of regular exercise are well documented. We need to find exercise routines that are fun and match our individual tastes. Developing a good exercise routine is a habit that will increase both the quantity and quality of your life.
 4. Practice gratitude. It is so easy to get in the bad habit of envying what others have. The grass often seems greener on the other side of the fence. It is vitally important to learn gratitude. Practice thinking about the things you have to be thankful about. I do this with my daughter each evening when I put her to bed. I ask her to recall the good things that happened that day. We then take a few minutes and give thanks for those things. This helps us both to train ourselves to be grateful..
Develop good study habits. Studying effectively is a skill. People that live life to the fullest are lifelong learners. They never stop trying new things. One needs to study and gather new knowledge in an effective and efficient manner. Learning how to study and acquire the knowledge to succeed doesn’t just occur naturally. It needs to be taught. Take a study skills course or ask others for tips on improving your study habits.
 6. Never give up! I remember being told in school that, “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” I think this is a Vince Lombardi quote and it is certainly true. It takes perseverance in life to enjoy any kind of success. I also remember hearing, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” These sayings come back to me time and again when I feel like giving up. Perseverance is a habit. It is one that can be developed just like any other.
 7. Manage money wisely. Why don’t they teach a good personal finance class in school? Students need to learn to earn, save, budget, track, and wisely spend money to be successful in life. Good money habits can never start too early. There are a lot of good resources out there to help. I recommend taking a look at what Dave Ramsey has to offer for various ages. Of course, you can also find a lot of fantastic money tips reading blogs!
8. Respect the environment. It seems to be hip to be “green”, but being a good steward of our environment is really not that new. Wise parents have been teaching these principles to their children for ages. We only have this one world and we depend on it for our survival. Every person needs to do their part to protect what we have. Develop habits now that will help you to be a good environmental citizen for a lifetime!
 9. Strive for excellence! Why do a job if you aren’t going to do it right? We need to develop the habit of giving every task our best effort. Excellence should be the standard we strive for in all we do. We can’t start letting ourselves or our children do the least possible to get by. If we do, then they are going to receive less than the best results from their work. Teaching excellence now will ensure habits for success will carry forward.
 10. Live the Golden Rule. “Do unto others…” is a guideline we should all follow. Think of the conflict and tragedy that could have been avoided if people simply applied the Golden Rule in all their relationships. If we make this a habit, then we will find a lot more success in life. Respecting people of all races and beliefs is a hallmark of living life to the fullest.
 11. Practice good hygiene. You really can dress for success! Habits like brushing your teeth twice a day and washing your hands regularly not only contribute to health, but also lead to routines that give one a sharper appearance. First impressions are powerful and are mostly derived from the way a person looks. Like it or not this is true. Start today to ensure you do what it takes to leave a lasting good impression.
 12. Always tell the truth! The truth often comes out whether we want it to or not. Lying generally just complicates the situation and makes us look bad. Look at the scandals many of our politicians fall into because they fail to admit the truth. It is much better to just develop the habit of telling the truth even when it is difficult. This will save you a lot of heartache and misery in life.
 13. Ask for what you want. Develop the habit of asking for what you want. How else are you going to get it? It is really that simple. Often, when I ask, I am amazed at how quickly I get exactly what I wanted. Just give this one a try. If you are a parent, teach your children to ask others for what they want. This is truly a behavior you want to come naturally. It will build confidence and self-esteem that will serve your kids forever!
 14. Be a regular reader. Being a good reader is a skill that often separates the good students from those that struggle. Becoming a good reader takes practice. The more you read and are read to, the better you get. Reading has numerous benefits. It builds one’s vocabulary, expands the imagination, and rekindles creativity. Make reading a routine!
 15. Be punctual. Arriving on time is important to one’s success. People always notice when you are late. It is an indicator of whether you mean what you say and can be trusted. Do not introduce doubt about this into people’s minds by showing up later than expected. Create the habit of being punctual now and you won’t have to worry.
 16. Respect authority. Failure to respect those in authority positions can lead to all kinds of problems in life. It doesn’t matter whether it is your boss, a police officer, or a university dean. People in authority have a job to do and often worked hard to get into the position they are in. They deserve to be treated with proper manners and reverence. Learning to say, “Yes ma’am” and “Yes sir” will get you noticed in a positive way.
 17. Tend to your spiritual needs. We cannot ignore our spiritual needs and truly live a full and rewarding life. We must recognize that there is a higher power and pursue our faith regularly. We may not exercise our beliefs in exactly the same way, but I encourage you to find what works for you and explore it to it’s depths. A solid spiritual life will serve you well. Good habits developed now will last a lifetime! These are good habits you want to set in concrete now. The quicker you make these habits that you live by, the better life you will experience. If you are a parent, then print this list and work on it with your children. Back to school is an excellent time to focus on new habits that will last a lifetime!
